The residents of Metula are no strangers to challenges. As Israel's northernmost town, Metula has endured attacks, rocket fire and incursions from Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon. Following October 7th, Hezbollah's attacks intensified, turning Metula into a battleground and later, a closed military area. Families were displaced, homes and businesses were damaged, and daily life was put on hold for nearly 2 years.
This March, renewed attacks during the conflict with Iran once again sent residents running to shelters, disrupting the fragile process of rebuilding and recovery which was underway.
Yet even amid uncertainty, the people of Metula continue to look forward.
Over the past year, Dror Israel educators have been working alongside residents to strengthen community life and support local initiatives that will help shape the town's future. Rather than focusing only on physical rebuilding, these efforts recognize that community resilience is built through relationships, shared purpose, and opportunities for people to take an active role in recovery.

One initiative brings together residents who want to establish businesses with a social mission. Through workshops, individual mentoring, and ongoing support, participants are developing ventures that can both provide livelihoods and contribute to the renewal of community life in Metula. These emerging social enterprises reflect a belief that rebuilding the north requires not only restoring what was lost, but creating new opportunities for connection, employment, and local leadership.
Another project, "The Metula Anthology", invites residents to document their experiences of war, displacement, and life on the border through writing, artwork, and personal reflection. Through workshops for both younger and older residents, community members are helping create a collective record of this period. The project provides a space for expression while preserving the unique story of Metula through the voices of the people who lived it.

Alongside these flagship initiatives, Dror Israel educators continue to support local forums focused on tourism, young adults, and broader community development, helping residents work together to imagine and build the next chapter of life in the town.
Dozens of residents have already participated in these programs. Their involvement reflects the determination of a small but resilient community that continues to invest in its future despite ongoing challenges.

We are grateful to the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles for helping make this work possible. Their support has enabled us to stand alongside the residents of Metula as they navigate recovery, strengthen community bonds, and continue the long process of rebuilding life in Israel's north.
