Strength and Storytelling in Our Senior Circles

As part of the Dror Community Network for the Elderly, Dror Israel’s nationwide system of programs that combat loneliness, strengthen community bonds, and empower seniors, the Havruta program has become a meaningful home for hundreds of older adults. Havruta is a guided companionship and learning group for seniors, developed through MAKOM, a coalition of 14 organizations formed to address socio-economic inequality, and was created shortly after the events of October 7, 2023. Among its eight groups across Israel are veterans of the IDF Disabled Veterans Organization, many of whom carried the security of the country on their shoulders, paid profound physical and emotional costs, and continue to stand as pillars of Israeli society. For more than two years, over 200 veterans have been meeting regularly through Havruta, guided by educators from the Dror Community Network for the Elderly, to build friendships, foster belonging, and rediscover the strength and purpose that community brings.

Through conversation and shared life experiences, senior IDF veterans build closeness, community, and a deep sense of belonging.

This year, Hanukkah took on especially deep meaning for these veterans as they gathered at Beit HaLochem centers in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Be’er Sheva, Jerusalem, and at the organization’s branch in Karmiel. Beit HaLochem, which translates to “House of the Warrior,” is a network of rehabilitation and community centers that provide lifelong physical, social, and emotional support to IDF disabled veterans. Around a shared table, the groups held an open conversation on themes of tradition, family, and courage. They spoke not only of the bravery shown on the battlefield, but also of daily acts of perseverance, generosity, and choosing to move forward even in challenging times. Participants shared personal stories, memories, and reflections about the heroes in their own lives, creating a powerful sense of connection across generations. The gatherings concluded with a festive candle-lighting ceremony and Hanukkah songs that filled the room with warmth and lifted everyone’s spirits.

As the candles were lit, each small flame adding its steady glow to the room, the groups offered a shared Hanukkah blessing. They wished that the light we kindle this holiday season will continue to grow, bringing comfort, strength, and hope to all those who need it. From the veterans who once carried Israel’s story forward to the young people who shape its future today, may the lights of Hanukkah inspire resilience, surround them with care, and guide them toward brighter days ahead.
