From Classrooms to Youth Branches: Dror Israel and NOAL Take a Stand Against Social Exclusion

Over the past weeks, Dror Israel has been leading a nationwide educational campaign against social exclusion, reaching children and teens in schools and in HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed (NOAL) youth movement branches across the country. Through thousands of activities and conversations, the campaign confronts a painful social reality and gives young people the tools and confidence to stand up for one another.

Rather than simply telling children that social exclusion is wrong, the campaign creates space for honest conversation. Participants are invited to share when they have experienced exclusion themselves, what made those moments especially painful, and why it can feel so difficult to speak up or stand out when others are taking part. By naming these challenges together, children and teens come to understand that their fears and hesitations are shared, and that they are not alone in facing them.

In schools and youth movement branches alike, guided discussions explore the real consequences of social exclusion, which can include emotional distress, disengagement from school, and in some cases self-harm. Each participant receives a pin that represents a personal commitment not to take part in social exclusion and to stand with others instead. The activities also focus on language, helping children recognize words that hurt, such as “No one wants to sit next to you,” and practice choosing words that include, like “There’s room for you here.”

Activities in NOAL youth movement branches are one layer of this national effort. At the same time, Dror Israel youth leaders in their gap year have entered elementary, middle, and high school classrooms across the country to lead age-appropriate activities and conversations.

In Akko, for example, Dror Israel youth leaders ran activities in 11 different classrooms at the local middle school in a single day. This is one day in one city. When this work is happening simultaneously nationwide, thousands of children and teens are encountering the same message and being reminded that they are not alone.

The campaign focuses on action, not only awareness. By engaging honestly with the difficulties young people face and surrounding them with consistent messages in schools and youth movement spaces, Dror Israel and NOAL help children build the confidence to say no to exclusion, even when it means going against a group. Guided by older teen leaders, they learn that choosing solidarity is possible and meaningful.

Through this nationwide campaign, Dror Israel and NOAL are delivering a clear message. Social exclusion is not inevitable, silence is not neutral, and every child deserves to feel supported and never alone.
